Naturopathic Medicine

Naturopathic medicine can be used to treat a wide range of illnesses, as well as to enhance overall health. Acute conditions—colds and flus, urinary tract infections, sprains, and many others—all respond well to naturopathic treatment. Chronic and recurrent conditions, like ear infections, allergies, chronic fatigue syndrome, menopausal symptoms, prostate enlargement, etc., can also be treated with naturopathic medicine, alone or in conjunction with conventional treatment. People with serious illnesses, like HIV/AIDS, lupus, cancer, multiple sclerosis, and others can benefit from naturopathic medicine—dealing with adverse effects of conventional treatment, enhancing immune function, and improving health generally. Naturopathic medicine is primary care.

A first visit with me is usually 70 to 80 minutes, and includes a thorough discussion of current and important past health concerns, as well as any appropriate physical exam. I make a diagnosis in ways that are usually very similar to a conventional doctor, although because I spend so much time with my patients, I can often find a deeper cause than is possible in a short visit. In treating my patients I use herbal medicine, nutrition (both diet and supplements), physical medicine (similar to what a physical therapist or chiropractor may do), homeopathy, and counseling, as well as making any necessary referrals, to conventional or other alternative providers. One of the things that excites me most about being a naturopathic doctor is that I have so many options in treating my patients—it allows me to tailor treatment to each person's specific needs. I see patients of all ages and with all kinds of health concerns, and can provide both primary care and supportive care for conventional therapy. If you're looking for a new approach to your health concerns, I can probably help.

I graduated from Bastyr University in Seattle, and completed my residency at the Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine in Toronto. I now divide my time between my Davis Square practice and teaching at the Naturopathic College of the University of Bridgeport in Connecticut. Some people in Boston may remember me from the theater group United Fruit Company, or from other peace and justice work in the Boston area. I came into medicine most influenced by the women's self-care movement of the late '70s. I think health care can be about helping people have control over their bodies and their lives.

My office hours are Mondays and Fridays, 10:00-6:00, and Tuesdays 12:00-8:00. If you would like to find out more about whether naturopathic medicine would be helpful for you, please schedule a 10-mintute no-fee get-acquainted visit. I look forward to meeting you.
